BMW Team RLL – Baltimore ALMS Preview

BMW Team RLL – Baltimore ALMS Preview

Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – August 29, 2012… With only three races left in the 2012 American Le Mans Series season, a third-consecutive GT class championship remains the goal of BMW Team RLL. This weekend, the venue is the Baltimore Sports Car Challenge, a two-hour race through the city streets that surround Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. In comparison with many of the other tracks the series sees, Baltimore’s temporary two-mile, 12-turn circuit is analogous to a wrestling steel cage match. Concrete walls on both sides mean there is only one way out – forward to the checkered flag. There will be many competitors, but as the last year has demonstrated, only one real opponent – Corvette.

Last season, the inaugural ALMS race at Baltimore ended in disappointment for BMW Team RLL, as the No. 55 M3 GT was punted from the lead by an overzealous pass attempt by one of the Corvettes with only 22 minutes remaining in the race. Bill Auberlen (and co-driver Dirk Werner) ultimately finished fifth. Joey Hand and Dirk Müller finished second in the No. 56 M3 GT and BMW Team RLL would continue on to clinch a second-consecutive GT class Manufacturer and Team title, adding the Driver’s championship for Hand and Müller.

This year, the rivalry escalated with the most recent episode at Road America, when the Corvette of Oliver Gavin knocked the No. 56 M3 GT of Dirk Müller from second place and into the fence with only two laps remaining in the race. Auberlen and co-driver Jörg Müller would win the race to keep BMW second in Manufacturer points – only 10 points back of Chevrolet.

BMW and Green Mountain Energy Company Partner to Support Renewable Energy

BMW and Green Mountain Energy Company Partner to Support Renewable Energy for DriveNow Program

New car-sharing program available to San Francisco residents

Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – August 20, 2012… BMW and Green Mountain Energy Company today announced their partnership to reduce the environmental impact of the entire BMW ActiveE fleet in the DriveNow program. BMW purchased renewable energy certificates (RECs) to cover the estimated electricity used to charge the 70 BMW ActiveE electric vehicles (EVs) in the new car-sharing program, which is available in San Francisco.

“We’re proud to have Green Mountain’s partnership in our recent launch of the DriveNow program,” said Rob Healey, EV Infrastructure Manager at BMW of North America. “Green Mountain supports renewable energy all day, every day which is consistent with the level of commitment to sustainability that we bring to our BMW ActiveE community.”

DriveNow is a car-sharing program that gives drivers access to efficient, premium vehicles. By purchasing RECs, BMW is ensuring that the electricity being put onto the electric grid on behalf of these ActiveE vehicles comes from clean, renewable wind energy rather than fossil fuels, like coal or natural gas. All customers who drive a BMW ActiveE in the car-sharing program can trust that their vehicles are supporting a greener electric grid.

BMW Group Announces Launch of ParkNow Mobile Parking Service and DetailsDriveNow

BMW Group Announces Launch of ParkNow Mobile Parking Service and DetailsDriveNow Car-Sharing Service, Featuring 70 All-Electric BMW ActiveE Vehicles, in San Francisco

San Francisco, C.A. – August 20, 2012… At a press conference with San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, BMW Group Member of the Board Dr. Ian Robertson today announced the upcoming launch of ParkNow, an innovative mobile parking solution that is a joint venture with Urban Mobility, and provided new details about DriveNow, a unique premium car-sharing service which features a fleet of BMW ActiveE all-electric vehicles. San Francisco serves as the initial U.S. market for each service.

San Francisco is at the forefront of cities working to develop and implement innovative approaches to urban challenges, including traffic congestion and the need for smarter, greener parking systems. There are an estimated 505,000 vehicles in San Francisco, yet only 448,000 parking spaces available at any given time. On weekdays, the total vehicle population increases by approximately 35,000. An estimated one-third of all downtown traffic on weekdays is due to vehicles searching for a parking spot.

“The BMW Group is more than a premium car company, it is also focused on developing and delivering new services to help meet the increasing need for flexible mobility solutions in our cities,” said Dr. Robertson. “The premium car-sharing service DriveNow and parking solution ParkNow will help meet that demand in San Francisco and, ultimately, in other cities. Our introduction of these services in San Francisco represents BMW’s commitment to encouraging the development of new mobility options that will reduce emissions and congestion and improve the quality of life for San Franciscans.”

BMW Team RLL Wins Road America for the Third Time in Four Years

BMW Team RLL Wins Road America for the Third Time in Four Years

Woodcliff Lake, N.J.– August 18, 2012… For the third time in four seasons of American Le Mans Series competition, BMW Team RLL drove a BMW M3 GT across the Road America finish line first to win the four-hour Road America Road Race Showcase.

Today it was Bill Auberlen and Jörg Müller who took the GT class victory in the No. 55 BMW M3 GT, racing past the checkered flag 2.63 seconds ahead of the No. 45 Porsche and the balance of the 13-car class. The duo completed 97 laps of the 4.048-mile circuit in the four-hour contest. Auberlen, who took the program’s very first win here with Joey Hand in 2009, started the race from the fourth position. He drove the opening 21 laps before handing off to Müller just before the race’s first full-course caution period. Müller cycled to the front as the balance of the field pitted and then drove 30 laps before pitting from the fifth spot to hand the No. 55 machine back to Auberlen. The Californian was forced back to the pits only one lap later to tighten the left rear wheel. He returned to the race in 11th with only the Team RLL mantra “Focus Forward” in mind as he stormed up to fourth place in 17 laps. Auberlen pitted on lap 76 for new Dunlop tires and fuel, returning in fifth and, as luck would have it, just before the race’s third full-course caution flag flew. With 38 minutes to go, he cycled to the lead as the race went back to green. One more yellow flag slowed the race, but Auberlen was not to be beaten.

The No. 56 M3 GT of Dirk Müller and Jonathan Summerton ultimately finished 10th after Müller was forced off course by a competitor two laps before the finish and was unable to continue. The incident dashed team hopes for a 1-2 BMW finish as the cars had been running in that order near the closing stage of the race.

Legendary Design Coupled with Roadster Tradition makes its US debut

Legendary Design Coupled with Roadster Tradition makes its US debut at Pebble Beach

Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – August 17, 2012… Barely three months after the sensational premiere of the BMW Zagato Coupe, BMW and Zagato are turning heads again at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance with the fruits of their latest collaboration. Created in just six weeks’ worth of lavish handcraftsmanship, the BMW Zagato Roadster represents another masterful example of the traditional coachbuilder’s art and an elegant take on the sporty, masculine marker laid down by the BMW Zagato Coupe.

At the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, this one-of-a-kind automobile is showcased along with the best possible company. Every year connoisseurs and advocates of coachbuilt classics come together on California’s Pacific coastline to appreciate, mull over and be amazed by an array of automotive exotica. One would be hard pressed to find a more appropriate venue for the premiere of the BMW Zagato Roadster.

The next stage of a successful collaboration.

The decision to launch another collaboration between BMW and Italian coachbuilder Zagato was made shortly after the BMW Zagato Coupe took its first bow. Encouraged by the positive reaction to the Coupe, Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design, and Andrea Zagato agreed to take their partnership a step further. On the menu this time would be a Roadster model. “We set ourselves the challenge of preparing the car in time for the renowned Pebble Beach Concours,” explains van Hooydonk. The BMW Zagato Roadster was duly conjured up in record haste, with only six weeks separating the first design idea from the finished model. “It was only with the expertise of both companies in the manufacture of high-end one-off cars and another display of outstanding teamwork that we were able to finish the car on schedule,” adds the BMW design czar.

BMW Team RLL Finish Third and Fifth at Mid-Ohio

No. 55 BMW M3 GT wins Michelin Green X Challenge

Woodcliff Lake, N.J.– August 4, 2012… Bill Auberlen and Jörg Müller drove the No. 55 BMW Team RLL M3 GT to a third place GT class finish in today’s 2.45-hour American Le Mans Series Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge after starting the race from the pole position. The finish also netted the No. 55 M3 GT its second Michelin Green X Challenge trophy of the season. BMW Team RLL teammates Joey Hand and Dirk Müller finished fifth in the No. 56 M3 GT after starting from seventh.

The team’s fourth podium finish of the season keeps BMW second in Manufacturer points, 20 points behind Chevrolet. Hand and Müller, the 2011 class driver co-champions, move back to second in Driver points. Auberlen and Jörg Müller hold onto sixth place.

“With all the restrictions the series has placed upon us, and the freedoms they have given to the competition, we are just not fast enough,” said Bobby Rahal, Team Principal. “There is an obvious imbalance evident in the last few races and I hope that the ALMS will do the right thing. When you know you don’t have the pace you have to rely on strategy and luck. This week the Corvette had an incident and we got lucky again. We need to get back to fair and equal footing and give these guys a run for their money.”

BMW ActiveE drivers can reduce their dependence on fossil fuels even further

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – July 31, 2012… BMW of North America today announced that it will partner with Green Mountain Energy Company to offer drivers of the BMW ActiveE the choice to support renewable energy for their cars. The ActiveE drivers, known as “Electronauts,” now have the opportunity to purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Green Mountain to cover the estimated electricity that will be used to charge their electric vehicles (EVs).

“The partnership with Green Mountain is BMW’s next step to procure a sustainable mobility future for our ActiveE Electronauts,” said Rob Healey, EV Infrastructure Manager at BMW of North America. “We want to ensure all ActiveE drivers have the opportunity to source their energy needs from renewable generation and this program is the perfect complement to BMW’s ActiveE solar offer.
