Rumor: BMW to offer X3 M and X3 M40i in next-gen

Third-generation BMW X3 will come to market in 2017. Built under codename, G01, the refreshed X3 midsize SUV is based on a new modular design expected to improve interior space and comfort levels, while under the bonnet there will be far more variety.

According to Motoring Australia, BMW is preparing not only an M Performance version of the X3 — dubbed X3 M40i — but also an M fully developed X3 M.

The rumormill churns out that the BMW X3 M40i will be powered by a 3.0 liter inline-six turbocharged engine producing 360 hp, while the X3 M is expected to inherit the S55 3.0 liter engine from the new M3/M4 which outputs 425 horsepower.


While the X5 M and X6 M are niche models, the X3 M, thanks to its lower price, could

BMW’s latest hybrid technology will also be offered, so expect a plug-in hybrid to run up to 50 km on electric power.

While it remains with only two rows of seats, the rear seats can be adjusted for height, length and backrest angle. The roller cover disappears when not in use in a recess in the boot floor.

The upcoming BMW X1 will give us a preview at the design language that is likely to be used on the X3 as well. We hear both cars were penned by the same designer.
