VIDEO: BMW X5 xDrive35d is an excellent road trip car

The BMW X5 is getting a bit long in the tooth, now. Having debuted in 2012, it’s currently nearing the end of its life cycle and we already know that BMW is working on al new model. However, despite getting older, it still looks good, has a great cabin and is still a very good car. Specifically the BMW X5 xDrive 35d, which is excellent for long journeys or road trips.

One of my first press loaners ever as a journalist was a BMW X5 xDrive40e and friends and family still rave about its interior, ride comfort and luxury. Those things still very much remain in the BMW X5, making it one of the best luxury SUVs on the market. But the X5 xDrive35d might be the best variant of the X5 (aside from the X5 M, of courses), thanks to its long-haul ability.

With its 3.0 liter turbocharged I6 diesel engine, the X5 xDrive35d is capable of getting hybrid-level fuel economy while also making 255 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. So 0-60 mph comes in 7.3 seconds, which is not unimpressive in a luxury SUV as heavy as the X5.

But the BMW X5 xDrive35d’s main party piece is its range. On a single tank of diesel, the X5 xDrive35d can do about 560 miles, according to FuelEconomy.gov. That’s a long distance to go on one tank. Imagine how many pee breaks?

So if you combine its impressive range with its Earth-twisting torque with its sumptuous luxury and class-leading technology and the BMW X5 xDrive35d is still one of the better luxury SUVs on the market. But when it comes to long-distance road trips, it might be the absolute best luxury SUV on sale.
